TURKEY TERRINE

A recipe that can be used as a celebratory treat for your dog on Christmas day.

Choose lean meat, as any fats will be released whilst cooking and make the terrine oily and only cook with a bone-free mince.

This recipe can be made as a raw or cooked terrine.

A recipe that can be used as a celebratory treat for your dog on Christmas day.

Choose lean meat, as any fats will be released whilst cooking and make the terrine oily and only cook with a bone-free mince.

Ingredients

1lb raw minced bone free turkey or free range chicken.

 2 free range eggs, beaten

200g of cooked, well drained, seasonal vegetables  (parsnip, carrot, broccoli, kale etc)

50g of  boiled, sweet potato (mashed or thinly sliced)

1 tablespoon of Hedgerow Hounds herbal blend.

Optional- 150g of chopped chicken livers

How to make

Line a loaf tin with baking parchment or lightly grease with coconut oil.

Transfer the meat and optional liver into a large mixing bowl and stir in the beaten eggs to combine.

Pour half the mixture into the tin, levelling off and pressing down firmly with the back of a large spoon. Place a layer of chopped vegetables, then pour in the remaining meat mix, firming down as before.

Bake in the centre of a preheated oven at 180c for approximately 45 minutes.

Remove from the oven and leave for a few minutes. While still warm, gently drain off any excess oil that may be trapped in the tin. Set aside for 30 minutes until cool. It is easier to divide into individual portions if the loaf is placed in the fridge before slicing.

The loaf will keep in the fridge for 5-7 days or you could make it in advance, pop it in the freezer and defrost the day before use.

It will provide a nutritious, tasty, moist meal for your dogs to enjoy.

Liver treat collage.jpg

These irresistible liver treats are very high value but be mindful that they are moorish and rich so too many will can loose stools.

Delicious, tempting liver brownies will make even the cheekiest hound pay attention!

For the Liver Brownie recipe you will need:

Raw liver 250g (lamb, chicken or beef)

Flour 200g (buckwheat , spelt or flour of choice)

Free range beaten eggs x 3 medium

Oatmeal or gluten free porridge oats 100g

Softened coconut oil x 1 teaspoon

Baking tray 10 inch

Baking parchment

Food processor

Mixing bowl

Sealed container or freezer bags

Preheat the oven 180c/ fan 160c or gas 4

Line a 10 inch baking tray with very lightly oiled baking parchment. In the food processor add the liver, eggs, coconut oil and pulse until it forms a smooth pate consistency.

Either add the flour and oats into the processor or if you prefer tip out the wet ingredients into a bowl and then fold in the flour and oats with a spoon. If you feel the mixture is a little too dry then a splash of warm water will loosen it slightly.

Pour the ingredients into the prepared tin, level off with a palate knife or the back of a large spoon. Place on the middle shelf of a preheated oven for approximately 30 minutes.

Remove from the oven and while still in the tray, leave on a wire rack to cool.

Cut to the required size to suit your dog and if using as training treats then squares are best. You can then break off tiny amounts to use as a reward, they have a strong taste and aroma, so a little goes a long way!

Keep the brownies in a sealed container in the fridge for up to a week. They can be frozen in bags so you just take out what you need for that day and they defrost quickly.

Hound on the go.JPG

If you are out all day with your dog, have a strenuous training session planned or a busy day at a show, these snack bars are ideal for active dogs and those that need a pick me up.

 You will need:

A baking tray lined with baking parchment

250g Gluten free Rolled oats or Oatmeal

A generous pinch of Pumpkin seeds

1 small ripe mashed banana

Optional half teaspoon of almond nut butter (must be palm oil & xylitol free) Pip & Nut make a good one.

4 blueberries, lightly crushed with a fork or dried unsweetened cranberries.

1 teaspoon of local honey (not for pups under 12 months) or blackstrap molasses

1 tablespoon of melted coconut oil

1 teaspoon of your favourite Hedgerow Hounds herbal blend. The Crowning Glory blend would look great in this bar!

Optional quarter teaspoon of cinnamon or turmeric, if your dog likes the taste.

Place the oats, seeds, berries and banana into a saucepan over a low heat. When the contents are starting to get warm add the coconut oil, honey and cinnamon, stirring and crushing with the back of a fork if necessary, until the ingredients are combined.

Spoon evenly onto the baking tray, levelling out and pressing down firmly with the back of a wooden spoon.

Place on the middle shelf of a pre-heated oven at 180c for approximately 20-25 minutes until a light golden brown.

Remove the tray from the oven and while still warm gently cut the size of rectangles you require with a knife. Leave to cool completely in the tin before lifting the energy bars out.

Make sure the bars are cold before storing in an airtight container for up to a week or alternatively wrap the bars individually and freeze.
